Two Roads Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2014
In every life, there are times when decisions are made that profoundly impact on your future. During wistful moments, it's only natural to wonder what might have been, had we taken the road less travelled.
Every year, we have a tough decision to make when tasting hrough our best barrels. Two Roads Shiraz represents one side of the story, the other fork in the road.
A normal winter with adequate rainfall was followed by a very dry spring and then a baking January that broke all records for temperatures. Just as the grapes were ripening, the deluge came and the process slowed down dramatically. Those grapes that remained healthy enjoyed moderate temperature and perfect conditions to re-concentrate the fruit flavours
The grapes are sourced from a number of our best growers in the north west of the Barossa Valley. In 2014, this included vineyards of up to 125 years old. Hand-picked, "on the way up" to total ripeness and then we give it a gentle cold soak before fermentation and pressing.
Ageing is done in 300 & 500 litre barrels, predominantly French and only ever about 25% new to allow the fruit rather than the oak to dominate.
The result is a wine that is multi-layered, textural and subtly fruited. Structured without being monolithic, tight, perfumed, effortlessly drinkable.
